The Department of Labor reports, that the field of dance and choreography is highly
competitive and only the best can find regular work. It also states on their website,
www.bls.gov/oco, that, "because of the rigorous practice schedules of most dancers, self-
discipline, patience, perseverance, and a devotion to dance are essential for success in
the field." Neo Lynch is a professional dancer who is fulfilling those tall orders.
Americantriumphjournal.com spoke with Neo Lynch July 20, 2008; at the time she was
25-years-old. Her real name is Suzanne Lynch and in the following paragraphs her
triumph will be celebrated.
“No one believed that I would be where I am now," she said. "They thought I was good
but not that good.”
In late 2006, Lynch packed up her things and moved from Alexandria, Va. to Atlanta, Ga.
to pursue a career in dance. It was a nine hour drive and when she arrived, she was
alone. She did not have any connections, any jobs related to dance, any friends or
family in Atlanta. She just had a goal that she believed she could accomplish. Since
that time, she has worked up a pretty good professional dance resume. She has
danced with some of the top performers on the R&B and Hip Hop Charts, has gone on
tour across the country and been seen in popular music videos played on television
networks such as BET and MTV.
Some of her professional work includes being in, The Dream's video for “I love your
girl.” She was in Beyonce's video for "Get me bodied." She was in Ciara's video for
“That's Right.” She has been featured in commercials for Tyler Perry and Dunkin'
Donuts. She performed with Ciara (performance of, Like a Boy) for the 2007 BET
Awards and then again with Ciara, Nelly, Jermaine Dupri and Fergie (performance of
Stepped on my J'z) at the 2008 BET Hip Hop Awards. She toured with Bow Wow and
Chris Brown during their 2007 Up Close & Personal Holiday Exclusive Tour. She was an
assistant choreographer to Cherish during their video for "Killa." She choreographed
the 2007 Seagram's Live Tour. She gave some advice to people who want to pursue a
career in dance.
“Research what you want to do exactly," Lynch said. "Find out which agencies handle
that. Get yourself some good head shots and think about the look you are going for."
Lynch was born and raised in Alexandria, Va. She started taking dance lessons at the
age of five. She was trained at Dancensations Dance Center Inc., located at 7572
Telegraph Rd., Alexandria, Va. There, she spent 11 years training in various forms of
dance including: jazz, ballet, gymnastics and tap. While she was there, the dance
company won numerous awards in regional and national competitions.
She is a graduate of Mount Vernon High School located at 8515 Old Mount Vernon Rd.,
Alexandria, Va. She made Richmond, Va. her home while attending college at Virginia
Commonwealth University (VCU). While a student there, she was an instructor teaching
their hip hop classes in the VCU Siegel Center. She founded a dance company called,
Urban Eyes Dance Company and booked several jobs for them including: being the
opening act at concerts for John Legend, The Roots, David Banner and Young Jeezy.
Urban Eyes also did magazine print ads for lingerie and provided intermission
entertainment at fashion shows. Lynch majored in criminal justice.
Her parents are both college graduates and wanted, Lynch, to get her bachelor's and
then enter law school. Her mother is a elementary principal and her father is a high
school history teacher and real estate appraiser. She said, they were not supportive of
her leaving college to pursue a career in dance.
She said, “At first, they were not supportive at all. They told me to get a regular job with
benefits.
The last three years I was in college, I battled with them about leaving because I didn't
believe it was for me.... Finally I told them no."
Before moving to Atlanta, Lynch did some key things to help her career venture. One of
the best things that helped, she said, was the decision to move out of Virginia (at this
time Lynch had strong ties in the cities of Richmond and Alexandria). She said, she
prepared for her move by saving money for six months working at Hooters and living with
her parents. She made other considerations for a relocation besides Atlanta.
“I considered New York, LA and Atlanta," she said. "New York was too cold and LA was
too far away."
She keeps a notebook and writes down all the things she wishes to accomplish in it. She
said, she did this before she moved to Atlanta. She said, that she has accomplished
everything that she wrote down. She said, she constantly revises her goals and keeps
on pushing for more. Lynch spoke about some of her future goals.
“Right now I'm traveling the country, in the future I will be traveling the world," she said.
"I want to be that girl, that you can't turn on the t.v. without seeing her face.”
She also expressed a desire to one day own a nationwide chain of dance and fitness
studios.
Lynch was asked about her workout routine.
"I am in a gym five to six times a week," she said.
Her workouts, she said, last for two hours and consists of weight lifting and heavy
abdominal and cardiovascular work. She said, it's part of a dancer's job to stay in
shape. During the 2008 BET Hip Hop Awards, she said, Nelly commented that her abs
were more defined than his.
